Low-Down Politics
Arizona “low-rider” owners and car clubs have unfairly become the poster-boy’s for misbehaving teenage cruisers.
Government “spin-doctors” are using Cheech and Chong imagery to justify passing a new law allowing the civil seizure of private vehicles in the name of “traffic congestion.” They ignore the constitutional issues of property rights and freedom of assembly which are also at stake here.
Both Phoenix Councilman Claude Mattox and Maryvale activist Maria Garcia who is running to become the districts State Representative mistakenly want to enforce harsh expensive ticket and tow penalties on their low-income constituents as a way to deal with the heavy inner-city traffic created by Phoenix’s successful “in-fill” policies.
Barricading thoroughfares and impounding resident’s cars won’t stop bored teenagers from cruising around looking for something to do, and urban congestion's certainly not the fault of hard-working car-customizer’s either.
Also, Arizona’s low-rider community contributes millions to our local economy and holds lots of family-oriented charity events too.
Perhaps these freedom-grabbing politicians could get a little diversity training by seeing the “Mesa Southwest Museums” low-rider exhibit and making reservations to attend their free “Low-Rider Symposium” Saturday Sept. 18th which will trace the 70-year history and evolution of the low-rider car-culture.

Outlaw News San Diego Chapter
There are twelve members now in San Diego with membership dates going back to 1995. I just want to thank all you old members for staying in the club and you new members for joining.
Also thanks Valli for keeping track of whats going on out there. And if any of you want to put stuff in the newsletter let Valli know and she’ll get it to me.
I have been working on the web page and with any luck I’ll have a new one up here in the next two weeks or so. Just like a mechanic our web page is the last to work on since I work all day and design web pages for others at night. But we do have a new and improved page I just need to get it uploaded.
Since most of you are new to the club I think I’ll include a past article with each newsletter for your enjoyment.

June 2001
Arizona Outlaws vs Cam
Busters
After receiving the e-mail from Rick (one of our Calif members) I knew we were in for some fun. You see what I received was a list which we referred to as the hit list. Well here's how it went, Victor 56 Chevy 496 8.40, Wally 63 Chevy Nova 383 9.99 (only once never backed up), Jerry (President) 56 Chevy (above photo with Jeff) 540 10.03, Tom 72 Chevy Nova 383 10.53, Russ 57 Chevy 383 12.20, Kenny 55 Chevy 402 12.55 & Toby 69 Camaro 383 13.79.
We left Phoenix with three Outlaws Jeff 72 El Camino 12's, Allen 57 Chevy truck e.t. not known because this was a new motor, Rick 66 Mustang 9's. In California there was Jimmy 67 Mustang 10.50's, Rick 66 Nova 11.50. Well Guy was suppose to race also but his tranny broke, but don't worry we gathered more on race day.
We spent Saturday at Jimmy's just resting, later that night we went out to find the street races. We were a little early since it was only around 9 pm and decided to head back to Jimmy's not wanting to stay out to late seeing how we were going to get up at 4:00 Sunday morning.
We awoke at 4:00 am Sunday morning all ready to do battle. We knew at that time we had five warriors and they could have as many as eight. We left Jimmys and while en-route Allen comes across the radio stating 56 Chevy on his tail. Yep when it came along side of him he could read Cam Busters. This would be Jerry he then pulled in behind Allen who was at the end of our line. That started the comments like "He better get used to this view" "He's behind one of us now and that's where he's going to stay all day". The day had begun…
While waiting in line I found out there were others who wanted to run in our event as an Outlaw against the Cam Busters. This would be Ron one of our newest California club members. And yes like Rick from Ca he too was an Ex-Cam Buster, his car a 66 Nova e.t. mid 9's.
By this time I was hearing lots of stuff about Jerry the President of Cam Busters. It seems he's not to fond of females being involved with cars, racing etc. So while in line Jimmy introduced people and when he got to Rick he said and this is Rick from the Arizona Outlaws. So the games begin.
We also gathered a 12-second Pinto who wanted to race with us also and our friend Todd who has a 69 Cougar 10.0's.
Once inside the track, parked in our spots I went over and introduced myself as the President of the Arizona Outlaw Street Cars holding out my hand to shake Jerry's. Well it's hard to describe his expression but I had to reach over and grab his hand and he just sort of d-d-d'd hi and I said lets race and left it at that. We then went about our business. Which was to start right off chipping away at their self-confidence and ego. Time trails.
This was a street race event put on by Safe Racing so there was no brackets except the gambler. We were opened up for test n tune during which time we started picking them off, knocking at their doors. First to knock was our member Rick he started the ego busters down fall.
Jimmy was his usual self, instigating even up to the first pass. Rubbing it in every time one of us beat one of them. It was all in fun and we did have that.
When the time came to race Jerry wanted to flip a coin and then pick whom you wanted to race; no I put all our names in a hat and let them draw first.
That was the beginning of the end for the Cam Busters San Diego Pro Street Car Club no, we spanked them 14 to 4. We showed them what heads up racing was all about. At first they wanted to run a bracket but after they saw us in the line out side they said no lets run heads up. I guess they thought they had us covered well guess again.
The 12-second Pinto wanting to race with us was still in the bracket so we just let him take out the Cam Busters during eliminations. Which he did. And now they thought they were ready for us.
Rick with the Nova had car trouble in the lanes so Todd our friend with the Cougar stepped in, this really pissed Jerry off he said his guy should have had a bye, HELLO there are no bye's in street racing….
Oh yes during the day Jeff needed air for his tires and Ron with the Nova went and borrowed Jerry's air tank not telling him it was for us. Ron told Jeff this is the air to use to take the Cam Busters down.
That 56 Chevy over there against Allen, is full fiberglass, painted headlights and he borrowed a motor for this event running in the 10's.
The battle is not over, they whined after the race real bad, saying something about meeting us at Super Chevy in Tucson. But since we want to hit them with some of our other cars we do not want to meet them at Super Chevy. So maybe when the weather cools off we just might take a road trip out to Carlsbad to race them again at another Safe Streets Street Race event.
They were saying something about a bracket this time, but we'll just have to wait and see. Who knows maybe we'll go out run them in a bracket race on Saturday and then go to the Street Race event and have some more fun.
Well as usual I'll keep you all posted and let you know just how much instigating Jimmy is doing over there in California at their Wednesday night cruise. This cruise is approved by the cops and there are even cars doing wheel stands as they cruise down the road. I also found out that the street racers (non-import) meet on Balboa Blvd Saturday nights.
