IT ALL STARTED IN MAY OF 1994
The Arizona Outlaws were started by a group of street racers, who after spending many nights out at the street races decided we wanted to find a way to race our way, but at a track. To do this we came up with the idea of Legalized Street Races. Needing a track we contacted Bob Curley at Phoenix Raceway Park, being an old street racer himself he understood what we wanted. With his help we started our Legalized Street Races in June of 94, we held them once a month always on a Saturday night. There was no structure racing, no brackets just heads up streetcar action.
We kept our nights as close to street racing as we could, with it being opened only to streetcars with an occasional exhibition car for a crowd pleaser. With Memphis holding their Fastest StreetCar shootouts out east we noticed the Craze was hitting the West Coast just about this time also. So we started shootouts called Wild West Fastest StreetCar Shootouts and held them here at Phoenix and LACR in
California. These races featured streetcars, which turned the quarter mile in as low as 8 seconds. We held these events from 1994 until 1997, but when Bob Curley passed away we moved on
to other types of racing at Firebird and SIR in Tucson.
We have changed from our streetcar only venue to our new event called SUPER GRUDGE RACE DAY. What we plan to do is hold heads up races for anyone who wants to come out to race, test n tune, race a friend, find someone at the track or just run against the clock. We are looking for racers who want to race and have fun doing it, no brackets, no pressure, and no losses just FUN. Our first event was MARCH 31ST at SIR in Tucson.
Our membership consists of StreetCar enthusiast, who enjoy contributing to the community in different ways. While racing at Phoenix Raceway Park we held a Street Racers Vs Cops event in honor of injured Officer Gary Whipp a fellow racer who was involved with promoting safe racing, proceeds went to Barrows Rehabilitation Center. We raised money for the children car seat fund at one of our other races. In 1997 and 98 we adopted a family helping make their Christmas a little better. In 1999 & 2000 we found that the Maricopa County Pediatrics ward could use some items, so we gathered walkmans, toys, blankets, Band-Aids, and a variety of goods for them.
We have a network of local sponsors who have been with us since 1994 and they are Allen of Arizona Kustom Koncepts, Roger from Standard Machine, George from Desert Cylinderhead, and Dillard from Performance Transmissions.
